Casey Coleman
Casey Coleman competed at Cooperstown Dreams Park with the Cape Coral Sharks (FL) during week 8 in 1999. Today, he is a major league pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. Casey played baseball for Mariner High School (Cape Coral, FL). As a standout pitcher at the varsity level, Casey earned FHSAA Class 5A All-State first team honors; he went 14-1 with a 1.11 ERA while recording a .429 BA during his final scholastic season. Upon the completion of his high school career in 2005, Casey was selected in the Major League Amateur Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 49th round. However, Casey opted to attend college and play for Florida Golf Coast University (Fort Myers, FL).
Casey played three seasons with Florida Golf Coast University. During his freshman year (2006), he played second base and was a pitcher. Casey was named to Division II All-South Region Team, named Independents Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Freshman of the Year and All-Independents Second Team. Casey finished the season with a .346 BA, including 56 hits, 32 RBI, and five stolen bases. On the mound he had a 3-1 record with a team high six saves and an ERA of 2.56. He struck out 50 batters in just 52 innings, and held opponents to.241 batting average against him. Casey started 41 games at shortstop and eight times on the mound during his sophomore year (2007). He hit .295, drove in 33 runs, scored 43 times, had eight doubles, three triples, a pair of homeruns, drew 27 walks, had 13 multiple hit games, and finished the year on a five game hitting streak. Casey made 14 appearances on the mound, posting a 6-2 record with a 4.29 ERA in 65.0 innings of work. He struck out 63 batters, allowing just 25 walks, and held opponents to a .268 batting average.
Casey's junior year, and final collegiate season (2008), he finished as one of the top two-way players in the Atlantic Sun finished the year with a 4.11 ERA and 7-3 record. His ERA was 10th best in the league, tossing 70.0 innings on the year and striking out 58 batters. He also played third, second and shortstop while hitting .312 with five homers while driving in 32 runs in 173 at bats. At the completion of the 2008 season, Casey was drafted a second time during the Major League Amateur Draft. This time in the 15th round by the Chicago Cubs.
After spending nearly two seasons in the minors, Casey was called up to the majors for the first time on August 2, 2010. He earned his first major league win on August 23, 2010, on a 9-1 victory against the Washington Nationals. He also recorded his first RBI in the same game. Although Casey did not make the team out of spring training in 2011 and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, he was recalled to Chicago and made his first start of the season on April 10th against the Milwaukee Brewers.
