Jacob deGrom and the Ormond Beach Golden Spikes (FL) competed at Cooperstown Dreams Park in 2000 during Week 5. The team took home the Around the Horn trophy, posting a time of 22.94 seconds.

Jacob graduated from Cavalry Christian Academy (Ormond Beach, FL) in 2007.  He was a member of his high school basketball and baseball teams, earning Most Valuable Player honors in both sports. Jacob was also First Team All-Conference in baseball. In addition to his high school team on the diamond, Jacob played summer ball for DeLand Post 6 American Legion team, helping his team win the American Legion State Championship in 2006.  He was named American Legion Rookie of the Year as well as Outstanding Hitter.

After his high school graduation, Jacob continued his baseball career at the collegiate level at Stetson University (DeLand, FL), playing three seasons before the 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur draft. Primarily an infielder throughout his career, Jacob played mostly third base his freshman season (2008) and short stop his sophomore year (2009). In 2008, Jacob finished 10th on the team in at bats (107), hits (26), doubles (3) and runs scored (16). In 2009, he led the team in sacrifice bunts (6), while finishing 10th on the team in at bats (128) and batting average (.258). He also made one appearance on the mound, allowing no runs and striking out one. During his junior season (2010), Jacob began seeing more time on the mound and finished with a 4-5 record with a 4.48 ERA in 82.1 innings over 17 appearances. Although he didn’t spend much time on the mound, Jacob was selected by the New York Mets during the 9th round of the 2010 MLB Draft for his pitching talents.

After the collegiate season wrapped up in 2010, Jacob headed to the Kingsport Mets (Kingsport, TN) for Rookie ball. He spent four seasons in the minors until May 15, 2014, Jacob made his Major League debut against the New York Yankees. Jacob continued his career at the Major League level, earning National League’s Player of the Week and National League’s Rookie of the Month in July of 2014. At the completion of the 2014 season, Jacob received National League Rookie of the Year honors.

Jacob’s success on the mound continued over to 2015 when he was selected to his first Major League Baseball All-Star game. Pitching for only one inning, Jacob threw just 10 pitches, striking out all three batters he faced, becoming the first in All-Star to history to record three strikeouts on just 10 pitches in one inning. He received back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2018 and 2019.
