Ross Wilson competed at Cooperstown Dreams Park in 2001 during Week 4 with the Bama Buccaneers (AL).

Ross graduated from Hoover High School (Hoover, AL) in 2007. He was a three-year starter on the diamond, hitting .409 during his junior and senior seasons with 20 home runs and 84 RBI. During his senior year, Ross was a 2007 Playstation High School All-American and played in the Playstation All-American game in Albuquerque, N.M. He was also named a 2007 First-Team Class 6A All-State selection by The Birmingham News and the Alabama Sports Writers Association and was a member of the 2007 Birmingham News Super All-State Team, the 2007 Birmingham News Super All-Metro Team, and the 2007 ASWA Super 10 selection. As a junior, Ross was a 2006 Honorable Mention All-State honoree by The Birmingham News and the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He was rated by Perfect Game Crosschecker as the 89th-best high school prospect in the nation in 2007, was rated by Perfect Game Crosschecker as the 42nd-best high school middle infielder in the nation in 2007, attended the 2006 East Coast Professional Showcase in Wilmington, N.C., and the 2006 National Showcase, and was a two-time All-State selection in football as a starting quarterback, throwing more than 6,000 yards and 60 TDs over the course of his junior and senior seasons. Ross led the football team to a 14-1 record and the school's fourth straight state title in 2005 and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 Super 6 Championship Game. During his junior and senior seasons, Ross was part of the cast of MTV's "Two-A-Days (Football), a program that chronicled the lives of students at Hoover High School.

Ross continued his academic and baseball careers at University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL). According to his Crimson Tide profile, during his freshman season (2008), he turned in one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in school history that included tying the UA single-season freshman home run record with 15, played and started 62 games, batted .295 with 15 home runs, 11 doubles, 4 triples and 60 runs scored and 47 RBI. Ross reached base safely in 51 of 62 games, was Freshman of the Week winner against Mississippi State and Georgia, named to the 2008 SWDC All-Tournament Team after hitting .357 with five runs scored, two home runs and six RBI in three games, tied the Alabama single-game record with two home runs in the seventh inning, UA's leading hitter in the postseason with a .414 with nine runs scored, named to 2008 Conway (S.C.) Regional All-Tournament Team, and tied UA NCAA Regional record with two home runs against Coastal Carolina on May 31. Ross also played for the Bourne Braves in the prestigious wooden-bat 2008 Cape Cod League, leading the team to a 23-21-1 overall record. He played in 39 games and made starts at second base (22), third base (8) and shortstop (2). Ross hit .217 (32 for 147) with one home run and 13 RBI and also scored 13 runs and added five doubles and one triple.

Ross recorded the following accomplishments during his sophomore season (2009): First-Team All-SEC selection; named to SEC All-Defensive Team; started 55 games at second base (54) and shortstop (1); hit .353 in 55 starts with nine home runs, 15 doubles, 4 triples and 59 runs scored and 47 RBI. He was the starting second baseman and batted second in all the games of the Cuban exhibition series.

Ross's junior season (2010) was filled with more accolades, including NCAA Atlanta All-Regional Team, SEC Player of the week (March 15th), and UA Coaching Staff Player of the Week (March 15). Despite suffering a hairline fracture of his right wrist, Ross completed his junior year with the following stats: .231 BA, 44 runs, 64 hits, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, and 47 RBI. Ross concluded the 2010 season as a 10th round Major League Baseball Draft pick by the Chicago White Sox.

Ross began his professional career with the Rookie League team Great Falls Voyagers (Great Falls, MT) in 2010. He played the majority of the 2011 season with the Class A Kannapolis Intimidators (Kannapolis, NC) and the final part with the double-A Birmingham Barons (Birmingham, AL). Ross returned to Kannapolis for the first part of the 2012 season but then moved on to the Class Advanced A Winston-Salem Dash (Winston Salem, NC).
